Want to Know What’s in Your Future?

So I’m trying to read the Bible through, and I’m never going to make it.

Partly because a few days ago I read something that made me raise my hand and ask, What about me, Lord?  For the next two days I picked up the Bible and started in that same place to read it again.

David wants to build a temple for the Lord. The Lord says, No, but then He goes on to declare to David grand promises about his future.

David says, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And as if this were not enough in your sight, O God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men, O Lord God.” (1 Chronicles 17:16-17  NIV)

I have this childish impulse to say, Not fair! What about my future? Is David just a lucky one to have God declare future goodness over him?

My mind started racing through the Scripture, and I realized God has spoken about my future, too.

And yours, if you are in relationship with Christ.

I landed in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians and started to make a list of everything that speaks to my future.

A really long list of…

Things I am to be.

Things I will have.

Things I will know.

I refuse to tell you what these are. Don’t you want to curl up with Ephesians and a notepad and a blanket (well, a blanket if you live in Montana in April) and discover this list for yourself?

Maybe no one has every spoken goodness into your future. In fact, maybe your parents or a cruel family member or a friend or a teacher told you your future held nothing. They were wrong. If you know Jesus, everything you’ve ever wanted is in the days ahead of you.

Promised.

I have to tease you with this one hope, from Ephesians 2:6,7:  “And God raised us up with Christ…in order that in the coming ages [my coming age is 45 –what’s yours?] he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

Incomparable riches. That’s what’s ahead of us.
