If You Had to Define Your Purpose?

As a follower of Christ, you have a purpose. -christyfitzwater.com

A few years ago I started this humble little blog, and I had to come up with a name for it. I started with Tiddlywinks, because that’s how my writer grandma signed all of her delightful letters –the kind that used to be typed on paper and sent in an envelope.

Then I changed to christyfitzwater.com, in the hopes of going all professional with my writing somewhere down the road, but I still needed a byline to describe why I was regularly hurling words into the universe.

I chose Guiding Women Toward Extraordinary Living, which was what I was hoping to do.

But I have to tell you that little statement has been making me NUTS ever since I slapped it on my website. It sounds arrogant to my ears, and I imagine someone stumbling upon my blog and thinking, Who does this chick think she is?

So I’ve been chewing on my purpose in writing, trying to find a way to describe it that just fits.

Have you ever done this? Chewed on your purpose –tried to define it?

You should.

I mean, you might never have a website. Like I know my momma won’t ever have a website. It takes everything she’s got to answer an email. But wow does she have purpose. She is a woman who loves God and influences people, and she is doing her faith.

As a follower of Christ, you have purpose, too.

Most likely no one will ever say to you, Give me your elevator pitch –that short little statement that sums up what God has shaped you to do.

But what if you had to? What if you were in an elevator with a stranger, and you had three floors to explain to him how you were gifted by God to shine light into the world.

As for me, I’ve made another attempt at defining what I wake up to do every day. So tell me what you think of this brand:

Know God. Live Big.

See it up there on the tip-top of my website page, next to my name? (If you’re reading this by email you’ll have to click it open to see it.)

This is IT. This statement is really it for me.

I want to know God. I want you to know God. And as we come in close to the Lord together, day in and day out, he’s going to cause our lives to bear fruit. We’re going to live big lives of great influence.

Jesus says:

He who abides in me and I in him, he bears much fruit.  (John 15:5  NASB)

So yeah. Know God. Live Big. I like it.

Now your turn. In 10 words or less, describe to me your purpose. What has God put on your heart that makes you lean forward?

Ready? Go.

  1. I took the challenge! Serving young adults. Passing on a legacy. How’s that sound? I first thought it should be ministering to young adults, but that sounded so formal. Serving sounds like doing life with purpose. The legacy is Jesus! Yeah, let’s live big together!
