It’s Okay Not To Be Good at Everything

I have a dear friend who owns her own paint color wheel, and when she walks into Columbia Paints they call out her name in a hello. So I casually wished aloud to paint my living room and begged her to take over. She pretty much told me we were going to be painting this week.

She helped me pick the paint color, bought the paint, brought all the supplies, and showed up on my front step. Now my living room is a clean white that makes my very soul feel clean and new.

Here’s the thing -she is Pinterest on feet, and I would rather go to the dentist than do a house project.

I need her.

I’m all rockin’ this Bible study thing and writing a blog, but I also have to live in a house. The husband and kids I room with have to live here, too, and sometimes the place needs TLC and a woman’s touch, except I’m not the right woman for the job. I do load the dishwasher on occasion, but you don’t see a lot of “Hurray, clean counter!” pictures floating around Pinterest.

Paul describes the church as a body.

Now the body is not made up of one part but of many…But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? (1 Corinthians 12:14, 18-19 NIV)

Without our sisters in Christ, we’re incomplete. Can’t you feel it?

What a glorious knowledge to gain, when we realize we stink at some things, and we need someone else who is awesome at those jobs to come along and help a sister out.

Do you know how my friend felt about coming to paint at my house? Not burdened and grumpy. She was happy. I sent her pictures of my décor re-hung the way she suggested, and she was practically giddy on the phone.

I’m happy with white paint that I never would have made happen on my own. She’s happy to have used her spectacular paint roller skills to help a handicapped friend.

So why don’t you look at your life and hang a sign out to your girlfriends at church that says, “Hey, I stink at_______. Help!!” And I bet it will make somebody’s heart sing to think that she can bring her skill to your rescue.

Maybe write a little note to one of those sisters -appreciating the way God made her that is a perfect compliment to how he made you.
