Do This to Add Spark to Your Daily Bible Reading

Do This to Add Spark to Your Daily Bible Reading -christyfitzwater.com

I was finishing up my bowl of mini-wheats, which means coffee and Bible reading was next in my morning routine. But I was hit by an unexpected feeling of boredom. Last week I started a slow read through the book of John, which is my favorite gospel, but I’ve read it a lot. There wasn’t going to be anything new, and I like to have new.

“Lord, I know better,” I prayed. “Your word is alive, and I expect you to meet me there and speak to me.”

After getting cozy under a blanket and taking a few hits of coffee, I walked with two men who left John the baptist and chose to follow Jesus. They spent the day with him.

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ).

John 1:40-41 NIV

“Yes, Andrew,” I said out loud. “Yes, I agree. You have found the Messiah. Jesus is the one your people have been waiting for all these years. Jesus is the one.”

My heart skipped a beat when I said this.

“I’ve found him,” I said with awe. “I believe Jesus is the Messiah. He is the one God has sent to rescue us.”

Not boring.

Later that night I went with Matt to the Thursday night worship service at the Youth With a Mission base, where he was the guest preacher for the evening. We sang a worship song by Hillsong called The Creed. The chorus is a confession of belief in who Jesus is, and I raised my right hand while we sang.

I believe.

Is reading the Bible boring to you? Let me encourage you to never use this feeling as an excuse to give up on your daily habit of Bible reading. God is alive and so are his words. We must meet him with expectation every day. Try adding an element of confession to your Bible reading this week. Do you agree with the truth of the passage you’ve just read? (If not, you have some soul work to do, eh?) Say out loud, “I believe this to be true.”

For Andrew, his life was never the same after his bold statement that he had found the Messiah.

Not boring.

How will your life change if you state your belief in what you read in the Bible today?
